Policy concerning the posting of articles from Evansia on individual websites

ABLS holds the copyright to all articles published in Evansia and does not grant the copyright to the authors at this time. Therefore, ABLS members may not post PDFs of their articles from ABLS journals. Doing so is a violation of the copyright. Further explanation of this policy and instructions on how to post a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) as an alternative to posting a .pdf can be found here.

It is essential for publication that the editor of the ABLS journal to which you are submitting your contribution recieve this form signed by all of the authors. The Assignment of Copyright does not take effect until the article is accepted for publication.

Subscription Information

Evansia is published quarterly by the American Bryological and Lichenological Society. Annual dues for membership in the Society are US $20 ($10 for students; $25 for families). The cost for individuals to receive Evansia is an additional $15. Members with non-USA addresses must pay an additional fee for mailing costs. Information for Contributors

Aim and scope: The aim of Evansia is to increase the awareness of lichens and bryophytes in North America among members of professional, government and industrial institutions, and the general public; to provide an educational and communication forum for the continued learning about biological, environmental, and economic issues surrounding lichens and bryophytes; and to teach and inform students, amateurs, and professionals. The scope of Evansia is broad including essays expressing opinions, popular articles of a more scientific nature, historical queries, and new items, but the scope is limited to issues on lichens and bryophytes. Contributions may include, but are not restricted to, reports on forays, meetings, local floras, and new regional records; techniques and aids for studying and curating lichens and bryophytes; student research projects; or reports of unusual obervations. It is recommended that essays and articles should focus on issues within North America, but they may not be limited to North America. Articles of a greater significance and descriptions of new species should be submitted to The Bryologist.

• The first section on Perspectives and Comments provides an outlet for essays and opinions on scientific issues that cannot be accommodated in the article section of the journal.
• The main section, containing Articles, should be written in a standard scientific format reflecting the contributions described in the scope of the journal.
• The third section, History speaking, includes one or two short, accurate essays on historical issues such as interesting biographical accounts or historical techniques.
• New items at the end of each issue will include announcements of forays, conferences, cources/workshops, outreach, naturalist society activities, and other items of interest to the readership.

Submission of manuscripts: Manuscripts should be submitted to the editor, Michele D. Piercey-Normore, by email mpneditor_evansia@umanitoba.ca. All submissions must be in English, but manuscripts may be published with abstracts in English as well as French or Spanish. See recent copies of Evansia for style and format. There are no page charges for contributions but a charge for color images will be imposed.

• An author-solicited review of all manuscripts is required. When an author submits a manuscript for review, a reviewer must be contacted by the author to forward a copy of the review to the editor. Once the author has made appropriate adjustments based on reviewer feedback the final manuscript should be emailed to the editor.
• At least one author on each manuscript must have a current membership in ABLS.

 Guidelines for authors:  Manuscripts must be submitted as Microsoft Word documents.

• Title and short abstract-- less than 150 words describing article contents and the significance of the study/observation. An abstract is required for all articles. Key words: no more than five.
• Introduction-- short, concise, and may lead to a goal or objectives for the study.
• Methods-- short and concise. This may involve a description of the areas examined and how the species were identified or a lengthier description of an experimental study.
• Results-- May be combined with discussion but must be clearly stated with references to figures and tables. Species lists or new reports will be included in this section.
• Discussion-- should compare results with the literature and discuss the significance of the findings or report. Concluding comments should be made in the last paragraph of the discussion.
• Acknowledgements-- Keep this section short acknowledging contributors or funding sources.
• Literature cited-- The format of the cited literature shoud be the same as that of The Bryologist.
• Photographs: High quality jpeg images (300 dpi) can be emailed to the editor.
• Illustrations may be sent as MS Powerpoint or Adobe Illustrator files.
